From Forest Floor to the Ayr Pod 🪵✨
They say necessity is the mother of invention, but in this case, it was the mother of a new favorite side table.
The Journey:
The Beginning: It started two years ago with a fallen Sycamore tree and a chainsaw. This was actually the very first time I tested out my planking jig! I milled a few short sections as a practice run and tucked them away to season, not knowing when they’d find their purpose.
The Pivot: Fast forward to the Orme renovation. When the original tabletop I ordered failed to show up on time, I had to think on my feet. I pulled that seasoned Sycamore out of storage—it was finally its time to shine.
The Craft: A lot of elbow grease went into this one. I shaped, planed, and sanded the grain until it was silk-smooth, then attached the industrial hairpin legs originally intended for the missing top.
The Finish: A rich coating of Danish oil brought out that gorgeous, pale Sycamore luster.
The Result? A bespoke, salvaged piece that fits perfectly in the refurbished Ayr pod. Sometimes the "backup plan" ends up being the star of the show.
